“We are calling on all truck drivers to ensure that the fuel leaves the terminal and is taken to the filling stations,” said Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbecue”, according to a report in the newspaper “Le Nouvelliste” on Sunday.

The leader of the G9 gang denied reports that the opening of the Varreux terminal in the capital Port-au-Prince was the result of negotiations. “We have not negotiated with the government to unblock the terminal,” the former police officer said.

Haiti suffers from political insecurity, extreme poverty and, recently, fierce gang fighting. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 96,000 people in the capital Port-au-Prince have already fled their homes due to the escalating violence. The interim government has asked the United Nations for help through an armed international force.

Haiti has had serious problems with corruption, violence and natural disasters for years. After the still unsolved assassination of President Jovenel Moise more than a year ago, Haiti has only an interim government. Presidential and parliamentary elections were repeatedly postponed.

Now the country threatens to plunge into complete chaos as gangs have brutally battled for control of the capital for more than a year. Thousands of people are starving. Cholera has also broken out in Haiti in recent weeks. (sda/dpa)
