After 411 days of consistently positive tests, a man (59) in the UK has finally been cured of his corona infection. The doctors achieved the breakthrough by analyzing the genetic code of his virus to find the right antidote.
The 59-year-old was infected with the early corona variant that first appeared in Wuhan, China. The patient had a weakened immune system as a result of a kidney transplant.
He was therefore given an antibody combination called Regeneron, which was also administered to then-US President Donald Trump (76) in 2020. The genetic analysis of the virus was important in treating the man.
No antibody treatment yet against Omicron
According to the experts, there is currently no effective antibody treatment for the currently dominant omicron variant, neither in the UK nor in the European Union.
“Some people with compromised immune systems are still at risk for serious illness and ongoing infection,” said Luke Blagdon Snell, physician at King’s College London, who recently published his findings in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
The patient, who has since been cured, is one of the people with one of the longest known corona infections. A patient also treated in Britain was infected 505 days before his death. (SDA)
