At least 13 people have died in a serious fire at a nightclub in the Russian city of Kostroma. The fire quickly spread over an area of some 3,500 square meters in the nighttime entertainment center, authorities said on Saturday. Five were also injured. The roof of the apartment building of the Poligon restaurant, which has been popular for decades, has collapsed, rescuers said.
Russian state television reported that 250 people could be taken to safety from the scene of the accident. The national commission of inquiry announced in Moscow that afternoon that a 23-year-old man, who was temporarily wanted, had been arrested. He is suspected of starting the fire with fireworks. According to the information, the manager of the restaurant has also been arrested for violating the fire regulations.
Local media in the city, more than 300 kilometers northeast of Moscow, reported, citing investigators, that the man accompanying a woman allegedly fired a fireworks rocket into the building, which is also known as a cafe. Violations of basic safety regulations in Russia repeatedly lead to serious fires with many deaths and injuries.
Authorities said there had been no fire safety check in the building recently. The owner of the building is a deputy of the Kostroma Regional Parliament. In a statement, he expressed his grief and promised assistance to the relatives of the dead and injured, Russia’s state news agency Tass said. (sda/dpa)
