According to a media report, an eight-year-old boy in India bit a venomous cobra snake, which killed him. He was playing outside in a village in Chhattisgarh state when the snake wrapped around his hand and bit him and he felt great pain, the New Indian Express reported. “When the snake didn’t move when I tried to shake it, I bit it hard twice,” the boy said, according to the newspaper. “Everything happened very quickly.”

The boy’s family rushed him to a clinic after the incident this week, where he was given an antidote, a concerned doctor said, the newspaper said. The boy recovered quickly as the bite was dry and the snake released no venom. Such bites are painful, but there are only local symptoms around the bite, according to a snake expert.

Snake bites are common in India. More than 63,000 people worldwide died from snakebites in 2019, according to a recently published study from James Cook University in Australia, of which about 51,000 were in India. Poor access to antidotes is a reason for many deaths in rural areas. (sda/dpa)
