Climate activists are not responsible for the cyclist’s death

The Last Generation group’s climate protests had sparked a heated debate in Germany. They had blocked the road on Monday. At the same time, a cyclist († 44) fell under a concrete mixer. Due to the climate blockade, an ambulance arrived too late to help. A heated debate ignited around the activists.

But according to a report in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the climate blockade should not have affected the emergency care of the now deceased cyclist. This is according to an internal memo from the fire service. The emergency doctor would therefore have decided that the concrete mixer should not be lifted with a special vehicle.

And this very special vehicle was stuck in traffic due to a roadblock by activists of the Last Generation group. The Berlin police have therefore prosecuted two climate activists for, among other things, not providing aid. The federal government condemned it Friday as a form of protest “taking into account risks to others”.

A note has been sent to the Senator of the Interior

According to information from the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the emergency doctor should not have been hindered by the traffic jam and should have received the victim of the accident. You briefly considered having the concrete mixer lifted. That “probably would have lasted longer and the medical situation would have gotten worse,” the paper quoted the note as saying. The concrete mixer must move with its own motor power.

Even if “other technical options with a rescue vehicle or crane had been available, this was the right approach.” The emergency physician “clearly stated that she would have chosen this method immediately if other technical options such as rescue vehicles or cranes were available,” the note continues.

The three-page note was signed by the medical director of the Berlin rescue service and sent to Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) of the Interior. The cyclist died in hospital on Thursday evening. The Berlin fire brigade declined to comment on the newspaper report on Friday. (AFP/ymh)
