More than colored skulls: Mexico’s days of the dead in 15 photos Inflation in Turkey rises to 85.5 percent

Anyone who has strolled through a Christian cemetery in recent days will find themselves surrounded by a sea of candles. Because on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, more graves than usual flashed over the course of the year – even in Zurich, which had been reformed by the reforms.

But while the Christians in this country reluctantly commemorate the dead, the Mexicans pull out other artillery: you Dia de los Muertos is an explosion of colour, light, parades, costumes and lots and lots of food.

Here are some of the most beautiful photos:

The Día de los Muertos stretches over three days – the spectacle lasts from October 31 to November 2. And while the theme is ‘death’, the Mexican holidays are life-affirming. At its core, Día de los Muertos is about showing and celebrating one’s love for deceased relatives.

In its origins, the tradition probably dates back to the natives of the region: in Aztec, Toltec, and Nahua cultures, people were still considered members of the community after death.

Today, Day of the Dead celebrations are a mixture of pre-Hispanic traditions, religious rites and Christian festivals.

The colorful ones are typical of Día de los Muertos calaveras (skull) and Calacas (skeletons). For many Mexicans, dressing up as a skeleton and wearing lavish costumes is part of that.

The heart of the party is the ofrenda, which welcomes the spirits of the dead into the realm of the living. These altars are loaded with all kinds of flowers, candles, pictures and foodstuffs.

The dead often get their favorite food cooked – because according to tradition, the deceased should be especially hungry on the way to the realm of the dead. also the ofrendas with sugar skulls or sweet breads.

In 2008, UNESCO included the Día de los Muertos in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. (yum)
