Two London police officers have been convicted of sharing racist and sexist messages in chat groups. A court in the British capital sentenced the men, aged 35 and 46, to 12 weeks in prison on Wednesday. Among other things, they joked with other chat participants about the rape of colleagues and wrote about electric shocks against children and the disabled.
The chat group also included the killer of Sarah Everard, also a police officer. The messages were exchanged two years before the 33-year-old Londoner was kidnapped, raped and murdered in March 2021.
The men were found guilty on September 21. Judge Sarah Turnock condemned the chats as “disgusting” and “disgusting”. The older of the two convicts is no longer an active police officer. They had defended their messages as black humor, but the judge didn’t believe them. The regulator, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, emphasized: “Social media should not be a shelter for such views. This kind of behavior seriously undermines the public’s trust in the police.”
The men’s verdict came the day another regulator published an investigative report exposing the entrenched sexist culture in the police force in England and Wales. (saw/sda/dpa)
