Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been silent since Sunday’s election defeat. In Brazil’s presidential election, left-wing challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (77) won the neck-and-neck race by a hair’s breadth.
There has been chaos in Brazilian traffic since the election results. Bolsonaro supporters have erected 200 roadblocks across the country to protest the results of the presidential election. The population is waiting for a statement from Bolsonaro, because he had already indicated in the past that he did not recognize the election results. Now he speaks for the first time since the elections in the Palácio da Alvorada.
But the content of his speech raises even more questions. He did not congratulate newly elected President Lula or say whether he accepted his defeat. Instead, he continues to wrap himself in subtle statements. For example, he claimed that he would continue to uphold the Constitution. However, he does not say whether this means he will accept the election. Bolsonaro said of the roadblocks: “The current popular movements are the result of outrage in the course of the election process.”
