A US State Department spokesman said Monday (local time) that since the conflict erupted on Oct. 20, significant human suffering has been caused, civilians have been killed and injured and a significant number of newly displaced people. The rebels should withdraw from their positions, disarm and return to dialogue with the government.
According to the UN, some 23,000 people fled in the DR Congo at the end of October after fighting broke out again in the northeast of the country between rebels and the Congolese army.
The Rutshuru region in North Kivu province, bordering Rwanda and Uganda, is rich in mineral resources. According to the United States, about 130 armed rebel groups are active there. The DR Congo with its approximately 90 million inhabitants has copper, cobalt, gold and diamonds. (sda/dpa)
