Attacker Paul Pelosi is charged with assault and attempted kidnapping

The man who assaulted the husband of Democratic leader Nancy Pelosis at her San Francisco home on Friday has been charged with attempted kidnapping.

David DePape, 42, is also charged with “disabling, influencing, or retaliating against a federal official by threatening or hurting a family member.” The US Department of Justice speaks of 50 years in prison.

The San Francisco police chief says it was not an act of indiscriminate violence. He confirms that before attacking Pelosi’s husband, the intruder said, “Where’s Nancy?” shouted, as was shouted during the storming of the Capitol. Pelosi, Speaker of the House, was at work in Washington on Friday.

DePape told police he intended to hold her hostage and break her kneecap. Police found zip ties in the bedroom and hallway, and DePape’s backpack contained a roll of duct tape, string, a hammer, and gloves.

Threats from Congressmen

DePape found a sleeping Paul Pelosi in the bedroom. Officers later saw the man hit the victim with a hammer. He underwent surgery for a fractured skull and injuries to his hands and right arm. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery, his wife’s office says.

In the past year, US congressmen have been threatened nearly 10,000 times. Capitol Police are advising MPs to take precautions. Capitol police chief says lone fighter threat has grown.
