Heads of State and Government congratulate the new Brazilian President Lula

World leaders congratulate Brazilian President Lula da Silva on his election victory. Shortly after the results, US President Biden conveyed all his congratulations to his new counterpart. He spoke of “free, fair and credible” elections.

The European heads of state and government also congratulate the left-wing politician on his victory over the right-wing Bolsonaro. That says EU foreign policy chief Borrell is looking forward to working with Lula and stresses that the Brazilians went to the polls in a “peaceful and well-organized election”.

French President Macron was also quick to congratulate him and said he wanted to strengthen friendly ties between the two countries. Chancellor Scholz, like British Prime Minister Sunak, is looking forward to the new cooperation on trade and climate protection. Prime Minister Rutte also sent his congratulations via Twitter.

The return of the former president, who ruled between 2003 and 2010, is seen as a good sign for the climate in many European countries. Bolsonaro has been criticized for his climate policies and deforestation of the Amazon. Lula has promised to protect the rainforest. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) calls his victory “a relief” for the Amazon and the world.

President Putin said in a statement that he hoped for closer ties between Russia and Brazil with the new president. President Zelenskyy said he was counting on “active cooperation with an old friend of Ukraine”. So far, Brazil has stayed away from the war and Bolsonaro has taken a “neutral” position.

Waiting for Bolsonaro

Bolsonaro has not yet commented on the result. The lights in the presidential palace went out without him acknowledging his loss or even commenting on the result. Before the election, he said his only loss could come from voter fraud.

Lula won 50.9 percent of the vote yesterday. After his victory, Lula called for “peace and unity” in the deeply divided country. He wants to improve the economic situation in his country. He also called for international cooperation to protect the Amazon.
