South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has declared a period of national mourning over the drama during Halloween celebrations in Seoul. 151 people lost their lives trapped during the extreme crowding in the narrow streets of Itaewon entertainment district. At least 82 people were injured. Authorities previously said 150 people were involved.
Yoon, who visited the crash site, called it “pathetic to see such a disaster happen in the heart of Seoul,” South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported. He expressed his condolences to the bereaved and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He also announced measures to prevent these events from happening again.
Among the dead are 19 people from abroad. They came from China, Iran, Uzbekistan and Norway, reports Yonhap.
The first statements of support are arriving from abroad. President Biden and his wife Jill offered their “deepest condolences” to the families who lost loved ones.
EU External Action Coordinator Josep Borrell tweeted that he was “deeply saddened by the terrible events in central Seoul”. “What was supposed to be a celebration turned into a tragedy with so many young victims. We are with the people of the Republic of Korea at this difficult time.”
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and his French counterpart Macron also expressed their condolences.
