The leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has warned that demonstrations against Iran’s staunch Islamist regime must end. “Today is the day to end the riots. Stop walking in the streets!” said General Salami of the elite corps.
He continued: “We say to our youth: A minority of you have been led astray. Stop this bad behavior. This rebellion will end badly for you. Don’t waste your future!”
Salami spoke at the funeral of victims of the attack on a Shia pilgrimage site in the city of Shiraz. There, a gunman opened fire on employees and pilgrims on Wednesday. According to Iranian media, 15 people were killed. Authorities announced today that the gunman has died from injuries he is believed to have sustained during his arrest. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State.
After the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16, mass demonstrations began in Iranian cities. She died after being arrested by the vice squad for allegedly not following the strict Islamic dress code for women.
The protests declared:
According to eyewitnesses, Amini was mistreated after her arrest and later collapsed at the police station. She died after being in a coma for three days. Police spoke of an “unfortunate incident” and said the woman suffered a heart attack while being transported to the police station.
Despite police brutality against the demonstrators and threats from the Revolutionary Guards, demonstrations continued at many universities today. Videos show and hear students demanding freedom and the end of the Ayatollah regime. Security forces have opened fire on students at a university in the northwestern city of Sanandaj.
Police brutality has killed at least 270 protesters in recent weeks, an Iranian human rights group said. 14,000 people would have been arrested. Some of them are accused of attempting a coup. They can be sentenced to death for this.
