At least 72 killed in tropical storm in Philippines Turkey: numerous arrests after mining disaster

The death toll from tropical storm Nalgae in the southern Philippines has risen to at least 72. More than 184,000 people have been affected, the national civil protection authority announced on Saturday. At least 18 people are missing, 33 were injured.

40 of the fatalities came from Maguindanao province, nearly 1000 kilometers south of the capital Manila. Days of heavy rainfall had led to flooding and landslides burying houses in mud and rubble.

According to authorities, the nearby town of Upi (population about 60,000) has been flooded and thousands of people have had to seek refuge in higher areas. Photos and videos from search and rescue operations showed bodies being pulled from the water and thick mud.

The tropical storm is moving in a west-northwest direction, according to the weather service. Authorities have issued storm warnings for more than 40 provinces and the metropolitan region of Manila. Dozens of domestic flights have been canceled and shipping has been halted in much of the country. (sda/dpa)
