The death toll from the Philippines’ floods rises, dozens are missing

The death toll from floods and landslides in several parts of the Philippines has risen to at least 47. Dozens of people are still missing.

The flooding is a result of heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Nalgae. A total of 7,000 people have been evacuated to locations where the storm is expected to cause the most damage.

Most of the victims occurred in the night from Thursday to Friday, when at least 42 people in Maguindanao province were swept away by torrential water masses or fell victim to mudslides with all sorts of debris.

Also five dead in the eastern province

The storm also caused nuisance in the eastern province of Camarines Sur last night. Five people died as a result.

There had previously been 67 deaths in Maguindanao, but that number was downgraded by authorities after some deaths were found to have been double-counted. The army and other rescue workers have been deployed to the province. Among other things, they saved people who had climbed onto the roof of their houses.

Storm warnings have been issued in several provinces and cities. The capital Manila could be hit by the storm later today.
