New elections must resolve the serious political crisis in Northern Ireland. UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Chris Heaton-Harris said on Friday that he would resume consultations with all political parties next week. “But I will call elections.”
The minister did not mention a date, December 15 is under discussion. Heaton-Harris previously tweeted that he had no choice but to schedule another vote in May 2022, just months after the most recent election.
A deadline for the formation of a unity government passed without result Friday night. That is why London must plan new elections.
The main Protestant party, the DUP, which is a trade unionist with Britain, has refused to form a joint government with the Catholic party Sinn Fein, which wants to reunite with EU member Ireland. Sinn Fein was the strongest force in the May elections for the first time. (sda/dpa)
