High-rise buildings burn down after explosion in Istanbul – at least 29 dead Strange threat: Botswana president wants to send 20,000 elephants to Germany

At least 25 people were killed in a fire in a high-rise building in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Tuesday. Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported this on Tuesday, citing the office of the governor of Istanbul. One person is being treated in hospital with serious injuries.

According to media reports, the fire was caused by an explosion in a nightclub in the basement of the 16-storey building. This happened around 1:00 PM. As a result, the flames spread quickly, trapping countless people.

The background is still unclear. Renovations were underway at the home at the time of the accident. Five people have already been arrested, CNN Türk reported, without giving further details. The Public Prosecution Service has opened an investigation. According to authorities, the fire has now been extinguished. (dab)
