The land borders remain closed for the time being: Bulgaria and Romania partially join the Schengen area

Bulgaria and Romania have partly joined the European Schengen area without border controls. Access controls at airports and ports were initially abolished at midnight on Sunday (local time, 11pm CET on Saturday evening).

At the land borders with Romania and Bulgaria, checks on identification documents will continue for the time being. This affects car travelers and truck drivers who drive to these two countries via Hungary or Greece.

At the end of December, the EU countries agreed on the partial accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area. Austria in particular is blocking the abolition of land border controls. The government in Vienna justifies this with the high number of irregular entries via the Balkan route. (SDA)
