It still looks inconspicuous here, but what the seven-year-old boy is holding in his hand…

Riley B.*, 7, was walking with his father Matt B.* in the forest near Rubyvale, Queensland, Australia, when he discovered something sparkling: what initially looked like an ordinary stone turned out to be sapphire! Yahoo reported on the extraordinary find of the little Australian.

In a video shared on social media, an excited Riley is seen running to his father. He then proudly handed him the stone. Dad noticed that this was not a normal rock and took a closer look. All doubts about the boy’s night disappeared when his father shone a flashlight on the stone. In the video, you can see the gemstone shining green and blue as the father inspects it.

Worth almost 6000 francs

The region surrounding the Rubyvale site has long been known for mining; the boy’s family also runs a gemstone business there. The expert mother estimated the value of the sapphire at 10,000 Australian dollars, the equivalent of about 5,880 francs, as the stone showed no scratches or cracks. Understandably, the father in the video enthusiastically says: “Woah, look at that! That looks really good, buddy! This is your best stone yet!”
