“Barbecue” gang leader wants to negotiate with government in Haiti over robbery of Japanese pharmaceutical company after death

The leader of one of the most powerful gangs in the crisis state of Haiti believes a ceasefire is possible if he is involved in negotiations for a new government. “If the international community comes up with a detailed plan where we can sit together and talk, but they don’t force decisions on us, then I think the weapons can be put down,” Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier told Sky News on Friday. local time).

He would consider all protection forces from Kenya as aggressors and invaders, Cherizier continued. If they came to Haiti, it would immediately lead to even more violence: ‘If the Kenyans come, the first thing they will do is start massacres in the slums, because the oligarchs and the corrupt politicians will tell them where to go. ‘

The backdrop is a multinational security mission authorized by the UN Security Council. Kenya initially agreed to lead the operation and send a thousand police officers to Haiti, but now does not want to send troops until there is a new government.

Even before the latest escalation, various armed groups had a total of about 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince under their control, according to the UN. According to Sky News, “Barbecue” is not only the leader of the influential G9 gang, but also heads a recently formed alliance of several gangs called Viv Ansanm and portrays himself as some kind of revolutionary freedom fighter.

The UN Human Rights Office recently classified the situation in the Caribbean crisis state with its more than 11 million inhabitants as catastrophic. The security situation prevented interim Prime Minister Ariel Henry from returning from a trip abroad, and he announced his resignation. The existing hunger crisis also worsened. (sda/dpa)
