“Voice Engine” presented: OpenAI program clones voices

Experts fear misuse of applications using artificial intelligence (AI), especially in the year of the presidential elections in the EU and the US.

OpenAI has stated that it is aware of these issues. The San Francisco company said it is aware that generating votes that resemble human votes poses serious risks that are especially important to consider in an election year. We work together with partners from politics, media, entertainment, education and civil society, and their feedback is taken into account during development.

Due to the potential for misuse of synthetic voices, the company decided to take a “cautious” approach to a wider release. Partners who tested “Voice Engine” agreed to rules. These therefore require, among other things, the express consent of any person whose voice is duplicated by the program. It must also be made clear to listeners that the voices they hear are generated by AI.

OpenAI initially caused a stir with the introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022. The program can use artificial intelligence (AI) to generate essays, poems or conversations based on very short prompts. ChatGPT suddenly made a large audience aware of the possibilities of AI. At the same time, however, fear about the potential dangers of the technology grew.

The company, which also developed the image generator Dall-e, also introduced an AI application for producing realistic videos called Sora in February.
