Another serious bus accident on the German highway: more than twenty injured. A tribute to director Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas

After a bus crash that left more than twenty people injured on Autobahn 44 in North Rhine-Westphalia, investigators are now clarifying how such an accident could have occurred on German highways for the second time within a few days. On Friday evening, a group of vocational training students had an accident on their way back from a trip to England. Their double-decker carriage left the highway at Werl, drove into the ditch and fell on its side. According to police, 21 of the 60 passengers were injured and one person suffered serious injuries. It was said that no one’s life was in danger. 39 passengers were unharmed.

The police seized the double-decker on Friday morning. A police spokesperson said this morning that the bus had been removed and the road towards Kassel had been reopened.

According to the police, the injured students from the vocational school in Warburg on the border with Hesse are young adults. It was initially unclear whether only students or supervisors were injured. According to police, the driver of the bus was unhurt and escaped in horror despite the windshield being smashed.

The accident happened in the direction of Kassel. The A44 was then completely closed on one side from the Unna Ost exit to Werl. The closure is likely to last several hours, the police spokesman said early this morning. The bus had to be righted before it could be rescued. In addition to the fire brigade, a rescue helicopter was also present.

Only on Wednesday morning did a serious accident occur on the A9 near Leipzig, when a coach carrying 54 passengers on its way from Berlin to Zurich left the road and fell on its side. Four women were killed, six other people were seriously injured and 29 were slightly injured. According to current knowledge, no other vehicles were involved in this accident. The bus driver was investigated on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm.

Serious bus accidents have occurred repeatedly in Germany in recent years. Yet buses are one of the relatively safe means of transport. According to accident statistics, they are relatively rarely involved in traffic accidents with personal injuries. (saw/sda/dpa)
