Lega boss Salvini wants a maximum of 20 percent foreign children per school class Gang violence in Haiti: situation catastrophic – 1,500 deaths since the beginning of this year

A discussion has erupted in Italy about a maximum number of foreign children in Italian school classes. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara said he supported a proposal by Lega leader and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini. according to which a maximum quota of 20 percent foreign children per school class should be introduced.

‘The majority of students must be Italian’ said the Italian Minister of Education on social networks. Integration is only possible if foreign children learn the Italian language, history, literature, art and music well. It is important that their parents are also involved in learning the Italian language and culture and do not live in separate communities, the Lega minister argued.

Salvini had previously called for the introduction of a maximum quota of 20 percent foreign children per class. He said:

«If you have many children in a class who speak different languages and do not know Italian, it is chaos. A share of 20 percent foreign children in a class is positive, but if there are only 20 percent Italians in the class, how should the teaching staff teach?”

School free at the end of Ramadan

Salvini intervened in the debate about a school in Pioltello near Milan, which, despite resistance from the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, decided to give students a day off school at the end of the Islamic fasting month on April 10. The head of the school in Pioltello, a town on the eastern outskirts of Milan, justified its closure after the festival of breaking the fast on the grounds that in previous years most Muslim pupils did not come to school on the day after the end of the Ramadan. so the school day was lost.

The words of the Minister of Education led to criticism from opposition parties. Social Democratic party leader Elly Schlein criticizes the proposal:

“The Minister of Education supports the madness of Salvini, who wants to throw children of foreign parents out of class. One cannot understand the obstinacy of the ruling law towards these children. Does she think they can deny the constitutional right to education to those born and raised in Italy?

In Italy, the number of foreign students with limited knowledge of Italian may not exceed 30 percent of the students per class, although exceptions are possible. (saw/sda/apa)
