Floods and landslides have killed dozens in southern Philippines. Officials speak of at least 31 dead and nine missing.
The natural disaster is the result of heavy rainfall associated with the approaching Tropical Storm Nalgae. The victims fell in several places on the island of Mindanao in Maguindanao province, around 1000 kilometers south of the capital Manila.
According to a regional minister, many residents were surprised by the rapidly rising water. “The water entered the houses before sunrise,” he told the AFP news agency. Some of the victims were buried in their own homes.
Rescuers are still looking for missing people. “I hope the number of victims does not continue to rise, but there are still a few villages that we have not reached,” said the minister.
Tropical Storm Nalgae will make landfall in western Philippines tonight.
