German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (61) wants to ensure more transparency in the recently published protocols of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from the Corona period. “Yesterday I ensured that the protocols were largely edited,” he told Deutschlandfunk on Thursday. “Maximum transparency” must be achieved. An online magazine had legally forced the publication of the RKI corona crisis team documents from January 2020 to April 2021, but many redactions were made.

Lauterbach announced that the content would be re-examined to determine if redaction was necessary. The RKI must ask permission from everyone mentioned in the minutes or representatives with interests whether they can be edited. “This will take a while, maybe four weeks,” said the SPD politician.

AfD speaks out

At the same time, he was confident that a “significantly more edited version” could then be presented. Lauterbach emphasized: “We do not want to give the slightest impression that the Robert Koch Institute is deliberately hiding something here.”

The SPD politician, who only became Minister of Health more than a year and a half after the start of the pandemic, also spoke out in favor of a political review of the corona measures by the Bundestag. This is ‘necessary’ because it should not give the impression that others want to keep something secret. However, Parliament itself must decide on the specific form of processing. As a member of the government, he did not want to make any suggestions about this, according to Lauterbach.

However, the AfD demanded that all protocols be completely blacked out. “If Lauterbach is actually seriously interested in a full investigation, all protocols of the RKI corona crisis team must be redacted, and not just the documents until April 2021,” explains Martin Sichert (43), spokesperson for the health policy of the AfD faction . “The public has a right to know what really happened between 2020 and 2022.” The public interest “far outweighs any possible data protection at this time.” (AFP)
