Here you can get on at six stops, but not get off: this is the most nonsensical bus route in Germany

Bus stop in Mohorn: Here you can only get off in the direction of Dresden and only get on in the direction of Annaberg.

This timetable has some pitfalls for bus passengers: the German bus line 400 runs three times a day from Annaberg-Buchholz via Saxon Switzerland to Dresden. But: if you want to board the bus, you must inform yourself in advance about the boarding and disembarking rules. Because there are stops where – depending on the direction of travel – only one or the other is allowed. Anyone traveling to Dresden is only allowed to get off at certain stops. When the passenger returns to Annaberg, he or she may only board and not disembark at the same stops. Even if there are passengers waiting at said stops, the driver will drive by if no passenger on the bus presses the stop button.

A “Bild” reporter dared to do the self-test and actually: When he wanted to get off at a “forbidden” stop, the bus driver pointed out that this was not allowed. In concrete terms, this concerns six stops for which, according to the newspaper, “special official requirements apply”. The reason for the confusion is the different neighborhoods in which the bus stops are located.

Lack of financing is the cause of this

At the request of ‘Bild’, a spokesperson for regional transport referred to the ‘permit under concession rights’. This includes “limited service at the stops listed.” Affected residents have no choice but to change neighborhoods – depending on whether they want in or out.

As complicated as the bus rules for Line 400 seem, the reason behind this practice is simple: apparently only certain districts help fund Line 400. “The Saxon Switzerland-Oster Ore Mountains district and the city of Dresden say nothing, which is probably why the passengers are being punished here,” writes “Bild”. Dresden would participate financially in a competing bus line, the mayor explained to the newspaper. Net: This line ends 66 kilometers before the terminus of line 400. (sam)
