Several people were killed in a serious accident involving a Flixbus bus in eastern Germany on the A9 motorway near Leipzig. For reasons that are still unclear, the bus left the highway and overturned, writes the German tabloid Bild.
The bus left Berlin promptly at 8am and was on its way to Zurich. The next regular stop would have been Nuremberg.
The accident took place around 9:45 am between the Wiedemar junction and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz. The bus would make a stop in Leipzig around 10am. The A9 was completely closed in both directions. Rescue workers are on site with five helicopters, ‘Bild’ reports.
Motorists were asked to keep an emergency lane clear. The Schkeuditzer Kreuz is located at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The A9 is an important north-south highway connecting Berlin and Munich.
The German newspaper ‘Bild’ writes about at least 5 deaths, a police spokesperson confirms this. According to police, at least sixteen people were injured in the accident on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, area hospitals were preparing for a large-scale operation. The emergency room has been alerted and operating rooms and diagnostic rooms are being prepared and made available, a spokesperson for the Diakonissen Hospital in Leipzig said when asked. In addition, the control center has been informed about its capabilities for admitting patients.
