On vacation: mother leaves baby alone for 10 days – dies

For ten days, Kristel C. left her baby, 16-month-old Jaylin, alone in her apartment in a playpen. She only put a few bottles of milk in it. She traveled to the beach in Puerto Rico with a friend.

When she returned to Cleveland, her daughter was dead, thirsty and starving. Two days after her mother left, a neighbor’s camera recorded the girl’s screams.

The gruesome case has now been heard in court. The coroner was close to tears as she described the girl’s ordeal. According to CNN, children between the ages of nine and 18 months are most likely to suffer from separation anxiety, she says.

Mother struggled with psychological problems

“The pain and suffering she endured lasted not just hours, not days, but possibly even a week. This feeling of desolation for days, combined with the pain of hunger and extreme thirst, is a kind of suffering that I don’t think any of us can ever fully understand.”

At the time of the crime, Kristel C. suffered from serious psychological problems and struggled with depression. According to her parents, she was unable to make sensible decisions at that time. Kristel C. pleaded guilty to murder and endangering a child.

She dressed her child in fresh clothes

Some investigators told the court the case was one of the most gruesome of their careers. After her return, Jailyn’s mother dressed Jailyn in new clothes and then called 911: “Please, please, help me. My daughter is dying.”

When emergency responders arrived, they found Jaylin on a mattress covered in urine and feces. The child was emaciated, had sunken eyes and dry lips.

According to CNN, the judge said at the sentencing: “You have committed the ultimate act of treason. This little baby held on and waited for someone to save him. And that could have been done with a simple phone call.” He sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole. (neo)
