In early March 2021, a top Swiss diplomat was found lifeless in Iran. Her death remains a mystery: the then 51-year-old fell from the 17th floor of a building in Tehran for reasons that are still unclear. About three years later, a case is still pending with the federal prosecutor – due to “a suspicion of an extraordinary death,” as the “Luzerner Zeitung” quoted the authority.

Now a second Swiss diplomat has been found dead – this time in Pakistan. He is a 63 year old Military Attaché. His task: to represent the Federal Ministry of Defense abroad. According to the newspaper, the man was found in a hotel room in Tehran in June last year with serious injuries to his head, knees, chest and stomach areas. At the time he was on a business trip. The 63-year-old was actually based in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

“He had a seizure in the hotel room, fell and suffered head injuries. From June 11 to 15, he was treated in a hospital in Tehran and then repatriated to Switzerland on the orders of the medical officer of the Swiss embassy. So far he is doing well,” a Defense Ministry statement said at the time.

Diplomat returns – and dies

Upon returning home, the military attaché reportedly underwent medical checks and recovered. He then returned to Pakistan – a decision with dramatic consequences. As an internal statement from the DDPS states, “the defense attaché of the Swiss embassy in Islamabad was found lifeless in his official residence.” This was about two weeks ago, on March 5, 2024.

According to the statement, emergency services could only determine that the diplomat was dead. It is still unclear how he died. “There are currently no indications of third-party influence,” the statement said. “The body was transported to the hospital in the presence of an embassy representative.” Local authorities also conducted forensic investigations in coordination with Swiss authorities and the embassy. Further clarifications are in preparation.

An army spokesman confirmed the death to the newspaper. No external injuries could be found during a medical examination in Pakistan. An autopsy carried out in Switzerland also found no indications of outside influences. According to the spokesperson, there is no official final report yet. Means: The cause of death has not yet been determined. (Mrs)
