As of yesterday, same-sex marriage has been legalized in all 32 Mexican states. Tamaulipas, a state partially bordering the United States, was the last to agree.
A day earlier, same-sex marriage was also legalized in the southern state of Guerrero. The President of the Supreme Court, Arturo Zaldívar, is pleased with the news. “There’s a rainbow across the land,” he wrote on Twitter. “Long live the dignity and rights of all. Love is love.”
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Mexico City since 2009, but it took longer at the state level. In 2015, Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled that disallowing same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. But only in the last three years have states pushed ahead with the introduction of same-sex marriage.
Three years ago, same-sex marriage was legal in just 10 of the 32 states, up from 29 earlier this month.
The rise can be partly explained by the rise of President Andrés Manuel López’s left-wing Morena party. Above all, the local party members of López are committed to LGBTI rights.
