In January and February, 196 square kilometers of the Amazon were deforested, down 63 percent from the same period last year, environmental protection group Imazon said on Monday.
The surface area still corresponds to almost 327 football fields per day. “The data shows that we still face a major challenge,” says Imazon researcher Larissa Amorim.
The government of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office with the promise to combat deforestation. Under Lula’s far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, deforestation had increased by 75 percent compared to the average of the previous decade. (sda/afp)
