According to a newspaper report, US authorities are investigating Facebook parent company Meta for possible involvement in the illegal drug trade. As the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, researchers in the US state of Virginia are investigating the extent to which meta-online platforms such as Instagram promote and profit from illegal drug trafficking.
The company said the sale of illegal drugs violated its own guidelines and that it was in the process of removing relevant content from the platforms. When asked by AFP on Saturday, neither the US drug regulator involved in the investigation nor Meta commented on the report.
Meta manager Nick Clegg (57) announced on Friday that Meta wants to join the fight against the trade in synthetic drugs together with the US Department of State, the UN and Snapchat.
In 2011, Google had to pay a $500 million fine over drugs. The company allowed Canadian pharmacies to advertise in the United States. This subsequently led to an increase in the illegal importation of prescription drugs. (AFP/obf)
