A video shows a high-rise building catching fire within minutes. This is a construction site in the western Russian city of Tver.
There have been no reports of injuries so far.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. One source speaks of bitumen catching fire. What’s scary is how quickly the flames spread through the building.
It is believed that a flammable insulation board was used during construction, wrapping the entire building. However, before this is further boarded up, it forms a direct route for the spread of the flames.
It would not be the first accident involving flammable insulation material. At the end of February, an apartment building burned down in Valencia. There, flammable insulation panels under a thin aluminum cladding turned out to be a devastating fire accelerator.
A similar construction method was also criticized during the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017.
In general, construction sites are more likely to be the scene of fires because flammable materials are stored there at the same time and there are many fire sources. Furthermore, compared to a completed building, protective fire compartments and fire suppression systems are still missing.
