Bought on eBay and then buried: Welsh hides coins to portray himself as Indiana Jones

Amateur treasure hunter Michael Jones, 64, bought rare silver coins on eBay and later claimed he found them at an event. At the metal detecting competition in Titley, a village in England, he placed the Crusader coins and then boasted about his discovery. But his opponents became suspicious because nothing similar had come to light on the site so far.

Furthermore, archaeologists say that if these coins had actually been found here, it would have changed the history of the Herefordshire-Wales border. A former person responsible for the finds in the region said: “These coins are very rare and important, especially if they can be linked to the Knights Templar. “Such coins have never been found in this region,” Metro quotes Peter Reaville.

“A moment of madness”

Another participant later discovered that five very similar coins had previously been sold on eBay. The seller was then contacted and it was determined that the coins sold were similar in weight and appearance to the coins that Jones had “found.”

He then admitted everything and said he was “looking for recognition.” The 64-year-old added: “It was a moment of madness, I just wasn’t thinking.”

Jones escaped with a black eye: the judge responsible declared the acquittal by saying that there was no evidence that the suspect had wanted to enrich himself. (dmo)
