Activists fear dozens of deaths after a shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea. Sea rescuers from the European aid organization SOS Méditerranée announced on Thursday that they had rescued 25 people from an inflatable boat that had been floating in the water for several days with a broken engine.
The survivors reported that about 60 people died along the way. In the message on the online platform
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said it was “deeply concerned by the news of a shipwreck in the central Mediterranean,” citing the SOS Méditerranée report. The Italian coast guard initially provided no information about the reported accident.
According to the aid organization, the boat left the Libyan coastal town of Al-Sawija on Wednesday, a week before the rescue. According to helpers, the survivors reported that the engine broke down after three days. There was no drinking water or food for days.
Migrants from North Africa repeatedly dare to make the life-threatening crossing to Europe in often unseaworthy boats. Serious boating accidents happen again and again. (sda/dpa/lyn)
