Latife Arab was born into the largest clan in Germany – in a world with a lot of violence and its own laws. Now she has written a book: “As a woman in the Arab clan”. She published an excerpt about “Focus”.

“Nobody wanted anything to do with the German constitutional state,” Latife begins her story. Because: The judiciary would not even notice most things. Instead, matters would be settled among themselves.

The men almost always have the say. The trial is conducted together with a judge, someone with a good reputation in the community. The perpetrator confesses his actions – as a sign of respect.

The other party then makes its demands known. “Whether it concerns money, objects or human lives, everything is allowed and nothing is impossible,” writes Arab.

“Every little thing and every stupid saying was a reason for violence.”

Women have no great value in this world. Arab tells about a case where a little girl from a distant uncle was run over by a tractor by her parents in the village. As compensation, the family received a piece of land from their relatives. The story was then shelved.

There are often problems – often within your own family. In many cases the solution is: violence! “Every little thing and every stupid saying was a trigger for violence,” she describes the dynamics in her family. Her brothers were also in constant competition with each other.

She places particular emphasis on her brother Yunus, a brutal criminal. Due to an argument with his parents, he allegedly hit a man who happened to be on the street nearby and sent him to the hospital.

‘Everyone who was in prison had failed’

Because he already had a criminal record at the time, he was sent to a juvenile detention center. “After almost eighteen months he was released on parole for good behavior.”

His family sent him enough money so he could buy subordinates at the juvenile detention center. A mobile phone was also smuggled into the prison. Usually he was only visited by Latife Arab and her children.

“It was a family affair: everyone who was in prison had failed and was simply singled out for that time.” As soon as he was released, he returned to his usual place in the family. Nowadays it’s different. The family stands behind a member who has to go to prison.

“The Stupid Germans”

Latife Arab also discusses the role of women. Although they are rarely directly involved in the crimes in question, they also have their duties. “We hid the loot, gave alibis, made false statements, had many children and followed the rules our men made.”

The ‘stupid Germans’ were no obstacle for the clans. During house searches they had a routine of who spoke and who stayed silent. Social benefits also always arrived on time. When cuts were threatened, the family hired a lawyer. (mgf)
