Chuck Schumer (73) calls for new elections in Israel.

Chuck Schumer (73), the leader of the Democratic majority in the US Senate, called for new elections in Israel on Thursday. In a speech, the top Jewish politician in the US said: “The Netanyahu coalition will no longer meet Israel’s needs after October 7. The world has changed radically since then and the Israeli people are currently being suffocated by a government vision stuck in the past.”

New elections are therefore the “only way” to enable a “healthy decision-making process” about Israel’s future. According to Schumer, many Israelis have now “lost their confidence in the vision and direction of their country.”

“Political survival takes precedence over Israel’s interests”

The American politician blames the Prime Minister himself for this. Schumer believes that for Benjamin Netanyahu (74), “Israel’s security is the highest priority.” “However, I also believe he has lost his way by putting his political survival ahead of Israel’s interests.”

The Democrat further doubts that Netanyahu’s government can lead the country to a long-term solution, as the Israeli politician has repeatedly rejected a two-state solution. Schumer, on the other hand, calls for starting negotiations for a “demilitarized Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.”

American criticism is increasing

The US is one of Israel’s closest allies. At the start of the riots, the Biden administration promised Israel “unconditional” support. But after months of war this is slowly starting to crumble. Partly because Israel repeatedly vehemently rejects the two-state solution advocated by the US.

The strict restrictions on the delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip and the high number of deaths are also a thorn in the side of the Biden administration. More than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7. About 12,000 of them were children. Despite all the criticism of Israel’s intensive warfare, the US has not yet halted its arms supplies and called for a permanent ceasefire. (Mrs)
