The recently released compilation of the videos was viewed 2.6 million times on Thursday. Students and teachers at a school in Sevran ironically dismiss the problems there as trivial matters. “Of course the heating isn’t working” and “Of course we don’t have curtains and we make them ourselves,” they say as students tape sheets of paper to a window.

It is the political decision-makers that we want to address, according to the channel France 3, student Léa. She told French news agency AFP that the idea for the videos came to her when she saw a clip from a prestigious Parisian lycée. “We don’t have what we need, they have big gardens in their lyceum, they have museums and so on.” She said on France 3: “The idea was to say that we are proud to be in Seine-Saint-Denis, but we demand additional funding. Those are equal opportunities.” The Seine-Saint-Denis department, northeast of Paris, is one of the poorest departments in France.
