The trial of German star chef Alfons Schuhbeck for tax evasion in the millions continued on Thursday with the questioning of a sommelier from the restaurant “Südtiroler Stuben”.

The witness reported to the Munich Court I about the processes involved in paying and signing invoices. At the checkout he sat down at the table with an interim bill. After the payment process, the invoice was then filled in. Special guests and regular customers would have received up to 30 percent off. The chairman called the procedure unusual, because the amounts of the interim bill could still be withdrawn.

The prosecutor accuses Schuhbeck of using a computer program to smuggle income past the tax authorities. In total, there is more than 2.3 million euros in taxes that Schuhbeck would have evaded between 2009 and 2016 in the “Orlando” and the “Südtiroler Stuben”. The co-defendant is suspected of complicity. Schuhbeck made a confession.

According to Schuhbeck’s lawyers, the discussion is about compensation for the damage, namely paying the tax debt, which may affect the conviction. However, the lawyer could not confirm receipt of the money in the morning.

It was initially unclear how the process would proceed. After a break, the process should continue at 12 noon. The pleadings and verdict were originally scheduled for Thursday. (aeg/sda/dpa)
