US President Joe Biden warned during a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk that Russia “will not quit on Ukraine.” “As Poland remembers, Russia will not quit on Ukraine,” Biden said in Washington on Tuesday. Russian President Vladimir Putin will “continue and endanger Europe, the United States and the entire free world.”
“We must act before it is literally too late,” the American president emphasized when he received Duda and Tusk. Immediately before the meeting at the White House, the US announced the sale of missiles worth 3.5 billion dollars (3.2 billion euros) to Poland. The State Department informed the US Congress that it had approved the sale of air-to-surface cruise missiles for 1.77 billion and air-to-air intermediate-range missiles for 1.69 billion.
Shortly before his departure for Washington, Polish head of state Duda called on NATO member states to increase their defense spending to three percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in response to Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. NATO must provide a “clear and courageous response to Russian aggression.”
Currently, member states must meet a limit of two percent, which NATO heads of state and government set as a lower limit at their summit in Lithuania last year. The US and Poland are clearly above this, with defense spending at 3.5 and 4 percent of their GDP respectively.
The meeting between Biden, Duda and Tusk took place on the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession to NATO. On March 12, 1999, the Czech Republic and Hungary were admitted to the Western military alliance.
