“No one expected that a Snapchat conversation would end up in court,” said juvenile judge Peter Wilhelm, who opened the hearing in the court in Leoben (A). The online conversation took place between three students from Upper Styria, as the “Kronenzeitung” reports. Two students (14) sat in front of the judge, unsure and with their heads hanging.
“They wanted to play Russian roulette at school, they wanted to start with two teachers,” prosecutor Andreas Petritsch summarized the situation. The young people also sent photos of weapons to the chat. Also a photo of a gun. “It was my father’s. He sold it five years ago, the photo is a reminder of that,” explains one of the defendants, a Hungarian.
There were also other images of knives and a hoe. The young person also had an explanation ready for these photos. He described the weapons as a “Miskolc starter pack” and told the juvenile judge: “This is a city in Hungary known for its dangerousness and knife attacks.”
Juvenile judge Peter Wilhelm had little sympathy for the two boys. “When you read through your chats, you start to feel uncomfortable.” Because: The high school students specifically wanted to start with two teachers. And that’s only because they weren’t as nice to the defendant as the other teachers were on the first day.
‘I didn’t mind it that much. I wanted to seem cool,” said one of the 14-year-olds. His friend gave the same excuse: “I wanted people to like me and I knew boys that age thought that was cool. I know what Russian roulette is, I saw it on YouTube.”
The story was discovered by the third student, who was also a member of this chat. However, she was shocked by the contents and reported the incident to the school principal. Juvenile Judge Wilhelm found clear words for the brave girl: “What you did was not a traitor, but completely right and wonderful.”
But the student did not just start an investigation against the two boys. “My client is now being bullied at school and is undergoing psychological treatment,” explains the lawyer for one of the defendants. Not only was he insulted as a ‘criminal’ and an ‘arms dealer’, but he had also recently been repeatedly exposed to physical violence at his school.
“The report was correct, just like the investigation. But too much excitement was created here, and then everything became public,” the lawyer continued to criticize. The lawyer of the second defendant also only spoke of rascal talk. However, Youth Judge Wilhelm saw it differently. He even elaborated on the prosecutor’s request. He sentenced the young people to 100 hours of community service, which had to be completed within six months. (mgf)
