Just an exercise: Polish and French soldiers cross the Vistula in Poland.

French President Emmanuel Macron (46) believes that sending soldiers from NATO countries to Ukraine is a way to push back the Russians. Is such an operation already underway? In any case, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski (61) said on Sunday: “There are already soldiers from NATO countries in Ukraine.”

We tell you what is known about a NATO operation in Ukraine and how violently the Kremlin could respond to it.

What do we know about a NATO mission in Ukraine?

Nothing more than the statements of the Polish Foreign Minister are currently officially known. Radoslaw Sikorski made no further statements at the event marking Poland’s 25th anniversary in NATO, as the newspaper “Bild” writes. He said only that he wanted to “thank the countries” that took this risk. “They know who they are.”

In the German Bundeswehr wiretapping scandal, a recording stated that the British had “a few people on the ground” in connection with the use of their “Storm Shadow” cruise missiles delivered to Ukraine.

Turkish units will also take part in the NATO exercise in Poland at the beginning of March.

Ralph D. Thiele (70), chairman of the German Political-Military Association and chairman of EuroDefense Germany, assumes that NATO personnel have been deployed in Ukraine since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. “Apparently the American CIA has had people on the ground for years to assist the Ukrainian secret service. In addition, British and Canadian special forces must also support the Ukrainians in planning operations and sabotage operations. It is said that the British wanted to sink the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

How divided is NATO?

There is no consensus on this within NATO. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65) categorically rejects the deployment of NATO soldiers. In the future, it will remain true that “there will be no ground troops, no soldiers on Ukrainian territory who will be sent there by European states or NATO states.” NATO itself says it has no plans for combat troops on the ground.

However, Emmanuel Macron believes that a deployment is possible and emphasizes that each country can decide independently whether to deploy ground troops – without a NATO stamp. Macron: “We will do whatever it takes to ensure that Russia cannot win this war.”

Is Ukraine dependent on foreign soldiers?

There is no doubt that Ukraine can only stop the Russian invaders thanks to Western arms supplies. It is also clear that Ukraine needs new soldiers. “But Ukraine still has great potential that it can tap into,” says Thiele. He explains: “There are about 500,000 Ukrainians that President Zelensky does not call for domestic political and popularity reasons.”

Will the Kremlin respond with nuclear weapons?

Thiele himself considers the deployment of NATO soldiers in Ukraine as “extremely dangerous”. The Russian army is currently achieving successes at the front. But if NATO forces were to turn the tide in Ukraine’s favor, the Kremlin would react with irritation. Thiele: “If Putin were put on the defensive because of NATO soldiers, you would have to assume that he would carry out his threats without restraint and resort to nuclear weapons.”
