Beijing aims for ‘reunification’: China increases pressure on Taiwan

Military pressure on Taiwan is growing.

The Taiwanese government expects China to exert more military and economic pressure to achieve its goal of uniting the island with the mainland. However, based on an analysis of military movements, for example, there are no signs of an impending military conflict in the China-Taiwan Strait, National Security Agency Director Tsai Ming-yen said Monday in the Legislative Yuan, the parliament in Taipei. However, around the inauguration of Lai Ching-te (64) as the new president of the island republic, scheduled for May 20, it is “likely” that Beijing will increase its military intimidation, economic coercion, political threats and manipulation of information. .

China wants to sow division among Taiwan’s more than 23 million residents and increase fear of conflict, Tsai said. Beijing considers Taiwan part of China, even though the Communist Party has never ruled the island and a democratically elected government has existed in Taipei for decades.

Fishing boat capsizes: two sailors dead

In February, an incident around Taiwan’s Kinmen Island, located just a few kilometers from mainland China, significantly increased tension in the Taiwan Strait. A Chinese fishing boat capsized as it attempted to evade the control of a Taiwan Coast Guard vessel, according to Taiwanese authorities. Two sailors died. According to Tsai, the Chinese coast guard was very active around Kinmen in mid-February. The situation has now returned to normal.

The National People’s Congress has been meeting in Beijing since last week. During the session of the non-freely elected parliament, the Chinese government emphasized that it would continue to strive for “reunification” with Taiwan. (SDA)
