Since the 1980s, warming in continental Europe has been about twice as fast as the global average.
“The assessment finds that European policies and adaptation measures are not keeping pace with rapidly growing risks,” the EEA said. In the report, researchers identified 36 major risks – from the impacts of drought and heat, floods and fires to the financial impact of climate change.
According to the report, many of the identified climate risks in Europe have already reached ‘critical levels’. Southern Europe is one of the particularly vulnerable regions. Countries in the south are mainly affected by forest fires, heat and water shortages. (sda/dpa)
