Two women drive into a bank. On the passenger seat lies the corpse of the account holder from whom the women want to withdraw the money. What sounds like an adaptation of the 1989 comedy “The Trouble with Bernie” happened last week.
Karen C.* (63) and Loreen F.* (55) were charged with gross abuse of a corpse on Tuesday in Ashtabula, Ohio. As the two women later told the police, they found their roommate Douglas L.* († 80) dead in their apartment on Monday. It is currently unknown how he died.
Shortly after their discovery, the two women launched a bizarre operation. According to police, C. and F. then placed the body in the front seat of his car and drove to a bank with a drive-thru counter, where they withdrew $900 from the dead man’s account, according to the New York Post. .
However, this required quite a bit of staging. The body “was placed in the vehicle so it was visible to bank employees for recording purposes,” Police Chief Robert Stell wrote in a news release. According to Stell, this was not the first time the women collected money from their older roommate. “The bank had previously allowed this as long as they were accompanied by him,” Stell said.
When the women finally got their hands on the money, they naturally wanted to get rid of the body as quickly as possible. They hurriedly dropped off the body at Ashtabula County Medical Center, but left no details.
So the doctors initially stood there without a plan and contacted the police, who immediately began investigating the incident and soon found out about the women. A few hours later, authorities finally managed to identify the dead man.
The incident could now have serious consequences for the women. Not only did the handcuffs click for both, they will also have to appear in court soon. Police also said they are currently investigating whether additional charges will be filed. (ced)
