From the coffee industry’s perspective, consumers may experience supply bottlenecks and higher prices starting next year.

The backdrop is that, according to industry sources, companies do not have enough time to implement an EU regulation proposed in November 2021 and adopted about a year ago. “We are threatened with undersupply on the German and European markets. Prices for the coffee that is still available will rise significantly,” the German Coffee Association said.

The European Commission does not agree with this. When asked by the German Press Agency, the authority said there were no known facts that would lead to the conclusion that the regulations would increase food prices. A very limited impact on the prices of the raw materials covered by the regulation is expected.

Holger Preibisch, director of the coffee association, calls for a postponement of the application of the EU regulation. It concerns the EU regulations for deforestation-free supply chains that came into force last year and will apply from December 30. In the future, this will require companies to submit a due diligence declaration that no forest has been cut or damaged for their product after December 31, 2020.
