Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced his retirement from politics. Turkey’s national local elections at the end of March will be his last elections, Erdogan said on Friday.
Observers responded to the statement with suspicion.
The 70-year-old Erdogan has ruled Turkey with his AKP for more than twenty years. He became prime minister in 2003 and president in 2014. Erdogan will not immediately participate in the upcoming elections on March 31, but the question for his party is whether it can wrest the capital Ankara and the important metropolis Istanbul from the opposition.

The next regular presidential elections will take place in Turkey in 2028. During the presidential elections in May 2023, Erdogan called on the population to support him “one last time”. The candidacy was controversial. For example, the opposition argued that Erdogan should not have returned to power under the constitution.
