Police there said they received a report on Friday afternoon that a painting at Trinity College had been damaged. Officials are on scene to secure evidence and continue the investigation. “No arrests have been made at this time.”

Balfour supported the creation of Israel

During the First World War, Balfour, as British Foreign Secretary, assured in a letter to the British Zionist Lionel Walter Rothschild (1868-1937) that he would support the project of a national home for Jews in Palestine. The declaration paved the way for the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

However, the establishment of the state was also followed by a war with its Arab neighbors and the flight and expulsion of approximately 700,000 Palestinians. On the Palestinian side, the letter is therefore seen as a historical mistake.

“Imbecile action”

A spokesperson for Cambridge college told the PA news agency that Trinity College regretted that a portrait of Arthur James Balfour had been damaged. “The police have been informed.” Support is available to anyone in the University community involved in the case.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden (45) wrote to X that he was shocked by this “imbecilic act of deliberate vandalism”. The perpetrators must feel the full force of the law. (AFP/obf)
