Does the man still have it? Or is he the unreliable old man his opponents portray him as? That was the big question before Joe Biden’s (81) State of the Union address last night. The American president has answered them very clearly.
Biden spoke for an hour and seven minutes, even shouted his speech into the audience with very few slips of the tongue, appeared combative and funny, was good-humored and confident. He attacked Donald Trump (77) head-on without mentioning him by name. And the Democrat left no doubt: he will fight until he drops to win the November 5 election. Four findings and one major doubt remain.
1
At 81 years old, Joe Biden is already the oldest American president in history. Does a retiree really have to do the toughest job in the world? Biden is very clear: yes!
When he was elected to the US Senate at the age of thirty, he was accused of being far too young. Now people tell him he’s way too old. “I tell you: it doesn’t matter how old I am. “It just depends on how old the ideas are that we adhere to,” Biden thundered into the audience.
Sure: Biden had to clear his throat here and there (as a result of his acid reflux, which affects about one in five adults). Certainly: here and there the president, who spoke noticeably quickly, made mistakes. But: Biden was funny (“I know, you can’t see it when you look at me, but I’ve been here for a while”), aggressive and didn’t even let the provocative bickering from the Republican corner of parliament come out from his mind.
Conclusion: Strong!
2
Donald Trump (77)? Biden did not mention it once in his 67-minute speech, but paid indirect attention to it a total of sixteen times (according to the trackers of TV channel ABC). “You can’t just love your country when you win,” Biden shouted at his predecessor. Strong material!
Trump’s close relationship with Putin and the blockade of the migration debate he orchestrated are all extremely dangerous, Biden warned. “If you’re watching, help me pass the migration bill,” Biden said directly to Trump. The background: Biden wants to tighten border protection, but Trump has his allies in the Senate block this in order to accuse Democrats of inaction.
“The choice is simple: We can either debate how we want to secure the border — or we can simply secure it,” Biden said.
Conclusion: Trump will foam!

Biden announced the latest news in view of the situation in the Middle East. He ordered US forces to build a temporary port in Gaza to “massively increase” imports of humanitarian goods.
In a move towards Jerusalem that was very clear for an American president, he said: “Israel is responsible for protecting civilians in Gaza!” It is “heartbreaking” what is currently happening in the coastal strip. Biden based his statement about “more than 30,000 deaths” on figures from the Palestinian authorities, which are not confirmed by Israel.
Conclusion: Biden creates facts in the Middle East.
4
“Stay respectful!” This is what Mike Johnson (52), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, wanted from Parliament. It didn’t quite work. Biden responded calmly to Republicans’ hateful bickering. And he was not disturbed by the screaming spectators in the stands, who were quickly taken away.
But: on no issue have Republicans joined the Democrats’ continued applause (except very, very briefly for Biden’s promise to bring home all Israeli Hamas hostages). This shows that America’s decision-making apparatus is more divided than ever before. The two parties block each other wherever they can.
Conclusion: It will be an exhausting four years – no matter who is in the White House.
5
For a long time, the American president stuck to the carefully crafted sentences of his speech. Every now and then, the 81-year-old looked away from the teleprompters and spoke freely. For example, to compete with the extreme Trump supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene (49). And that went wrong.
As she entered the room, the Republican presented Biden with a pin with Laken Riley’s name on it. The 22-year-old student was murdered by an illegal migrant on her college campus in February and has been raised by America’s right wing as a new icon in the fight against immigrants. Republicans blamed Biden for refusing to talk about the case until now.
But now Biden spoke, holding the pin up to the cameras and saying, “Lincoln Riley,” the wrong name. This shows that as soon as he has to improvise, things quickly become difficult for Biden. And: he will have no teleprompters in the three debates against Donald Trump that are already planned for the fall.
Conclusion: Biden’s supporters can’t sit back too much yet!
