General Valery Zalushnyj, who was dismissed as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces about a month ago, will become the new ambassador to Britain. President Volodymyr Zelenskyj has spoken out in favor of appointing Saluzhnyj to the post, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kiev announced on Thursday evening. Now the British side still has to officially agree to it. Last July, Zelenskiy recalled the then Ukrainian ambassador to London, Vadym Prystajko, shortly after publicly criticizing him.
Zalushnyj, on the other hand, was very popular with the people during his time as commander-in-chief, but is said to have had a difficult relationship with Zelenskyj. Under his leadership, the Ukrainian army recaptured parts of the Russian-occupied territories in the first year of the war in 2022, but a summer offensive in 2023 fell short of sometimes high expectations. On February 8, Zalushnyj was removed from his position. Colonel General Olexander Syrskyj was appointed as his successor. (sda/dpa)
